The museum was established on June 6, 2013. From 2013 to 2017, it operated in the basement of the Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Youth (CSTCY) building. Since January 2017, the entire building has been designated as the Memorial Museum "Kalush Prison."

The building itself was constructed in the mid-19th century. During the interwar period, it housed a detention center. The most horrific crimes were committed here during the so-called return of the “Second Soviets” to Western Ukraine. From 1944 until the early 1950s, members of the OUN and UPA were imprisoned here.

Beginning in 1960, the building functioned as a chemical-technological college. The former prison space was used for student training. Starting in 1969, it housed the Young Technicians’ Station. In 2008, the institution was renamed the Center for Scientific and Technical Creativity of Children and Youth.

On August 25, 2018, following major renovations, the museum officially opened. The exhibition is spread across four main halls:

  • Archaeological Findings Hall

  • Hall of the History of the National Liberation Struggle (early–mid 20th century)

  • Urban Life Room of the 1950s–60s

  • Hall of the Revolution of Dignity and the Anti-Terrorist Operation/Joint Forces Operation (ATO/JFO)

The basement serves as an exhibition space for thematic displays. Work is ongoing to develop exhibits for two additional halls.
